In early 2013, post-grunge heavyweights Three Days Grace announced they would be parting ways with frontman Adam Gontier, who founded the band way back in 1992. While the rockers soldiered on with a new singer (and released a new album earlier this year, peaking at #2 in Canada), Gontier promised he would be focusing on a new project. That would be nu-metal supergroup Saint Astonia, also featuring former Finger Eleven drummer Rich Beddoe (his old band coincidentally also releasing a new full-length this week), Eye Empire bassist Corey Lowery, and Staind guitarist Mike Mushok. The newly formed unit just released their debut self-titled, and perhaps unsurprisingly, it’s very much in the same realm as each member’s respective riff-heavy other projects. So much so, that I had to double-check whether I was streaming a 3DG album – which could be a testament to Gontier’s distinct presence and irreplaceable position with his former gig. Already, the lead single and Red Bull surging album opener “Better Place” has cracked the top 10 in U.S. Mainstream Rock and CAN rock charts.

Saint Asonia’s only listed Canadian date on their summer/fall tour is on September 1 at the Phoenix in Toronto.

Just for fun, here is Gontier playing in another CanRock supgergroup, The Big Dirty Band, covering the Clash’s "I Fought the Law", along with Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, Ian Thornley, Jeff Burrows of the Tea Party, and Care Failure of Die Mannequin for the Trailer Park Boys Movie OST.
