It’s not often that a Canadian jazz trio lights up the blog world – but Toronto’s BADBADNOTGOOD genre-defying eclecticism and killer chops are worth raving about. This week, they’re releasing their heavily-anticipated and groove-tight third effort, III, and it’s well worth the wait. BBNG2 drew in new fans with compelling instrumental interpretations of Kanye West, Feist, and My Bloody Valentine tunes, but III finds them flexing their improvisation muscles on their first full record of completely original compositions. It’s an endlessly lush, cinematic affair, with some of the strongest beats in hip-hop today – while not completely indebted to it, there are traces of DJ Shadow’s groundbreaking …Entroducing and trip-hop’s finest, such as Tricky’s Maxinquaye. BBNG’s most engaging release to date, undoubtedly worthy of multiple headphone re-listens and social media gushing.
